The Theatre on the Bay, CPT

17 October 2024

LAMTA’s production of HOLLYWOOD at The Theatre on the Bay is a dazzling display of talent, athleticism, and artistry that firmly establishes the academy’s reputation for world-class performing arts training. From start to finish, the show is a kaleidoscope of energy, precision, and sheer entertainment value.

The students’ athletic prowess is nothing short of breathtaking. Each performance is infused with an intensity and physicality that rivals professional productions. Whether executing gravity-defying leaps or commanding the stage with bold, synchronized routines or vocals, the performers demonstrate a remarkable blend of strength, control, and grace. Their dedication to perfecting their craft is evident in every move, earning well-deserved applause from the audience.

The choreography is another highlight, expertly crafted to both showcase individual talent and create visually stunning group numbers. Seamlessly blending contemporary and classical styles, the routines exude a cinematic quality befitting the show's Hollywood theme. The creative team deserves commendation for designing choreography that is not only ambitious but also deeply engaging, often eliciting audible gasps from the audience.

The Theatre on the Bay serves as the perfect venue for this production, with its state-of-the-art technical capabilities amplifying the impact of every performance. From dazzling lighting effects to crystal-clear sound design, the venue's resources are leveraged to their fullest extent. The visual spectacle created by the combination of top-notch staging and creative direction is undoubtedly one of the show’s key strengths.

However, while the production is undeniably impressive, one cannot ignore the advantages afforded by substantial financial backing. With access to premium technical resources, professional-grade costumes, and a premier venue, HOLLYWOOD benefits from luxuries that elevate its presentation. This raises the question: how much of the show’s polish is a result of talent and creativity, and how much stems from having the means to make everything shine? It’s easier to create magic when the tools at your disposal are cutting-edge.

The calibre of the students dancing and singing is undeniably comparable to that of their international peers. However, productions in other parts of the world often rely on ingenuity and storytelling to compensate for limited budgets, creating a more raw and emotive experience. While HOLLYWOOD dazzles with its polish, it occasionally feels like it lacks the grit and emotional depth that make some of the world’s best showcases truly unforgettable.

In the end, HOLLYWOOD by LAMTA is a triumph of talent, vision, and technical excellence. It’s a must-see for anyone who appreciates the performing arts and a testament to the high standard of training at LAMTA. I would, however, like to see how this is executed on a more humble stage like The Masque or the Milnerton Playhouse.
